Who's In It?
Hailee Steinfeld, Blake Jenner, Hayden Szeto, and Woody Harrelson
What's It About?
When introvert Nadine's only friend gets off with her popular all-star brother, she's left stranded on her own with only her teacher as a friend.
Any Good?
This movie feels like a throwback to the mid-to-late 2000s where EVERYTHING was a coming of age story, but MUCH bitchier.
About 80% of the main characters in the film are awful people - the main character is EXTREMELY selfish, the mother is borderline abusive, and the teacher is a dick. The only REAL good person is the brother, who's portrayed to be a villain but he's always looking after Nadine and telling her mother to act right with her.
While most actors are coming-of-age film tier, the actress playing Nadine was really good - both her body/facial acting and tone of voice were spot on for this type of character. The real star for me was Woody Harrelson as the teacher; he was horrible but everything he said was absolutely hilarious, and he has fantastic character development as time goes on.
Everyone is raving about this film, but I think it's good for what it is but the only real special part is Woody Harrelson's teacher. It follows most of the usual coming-of-age cliches, only skimping on the usual phenomenal soundtrack - which is a good one anyway, and is done by Hans Zimmer.
