Sam and Gilly are finally off the boat and on the way to Sam's old home, which we learn is headed by his wildling HATING father. After the obvious 'you're not a wildling okay??' talk, they meet Sam's mother and sister who may be the only truly kind people in the series.
During the requisite awkward dinner, Sam's father mentions his Valyrian steel sword - insulting Sam as not being a warrior in the same breath while ignoring Gilly telling him Sam killed a white walker. While Randyll Tarly is a dick, he actually surprised me with a halfway decent gesture at the end of dinner; but it still felt great watching Sam nut up and get his own back.
Jaime was AWESOME in this episode. Despite Mace the Ace's terrible rally cry, he led the King's Guard (I think?) to the steps of the High Sparrow's temple to stop Margaery's walk of atonement. He then rode his horse up the steps, badass right? The King's Guard then prepares to charge, this is it.
Nah jk, Cersei's children always find a way to wreck something. But just seeing Jaime face up to the Sparrow was more than satisfying.
See, badass! Credit to reddit user r/samdroid24!
And then we went back to Dany doing what she does best - wandering aimlessly in a sandy place. She FINALLY asks the obvious question of 'how many ships will I need?' about 5 seasons too late, but Daario is cut off by the prodigal son returning. I don't know what it is about the Dothrak, but they seem to eat up any regurgitated speech from Dany as long as fire is involved; even though you know they'll fail.
Arya however did something interesting thank god, despite undermining EVERYTHING she's done since season 3. She obviously never was a faceless assassin, but the way she ditched must have REALLY annoyed Jaquen, to the point of sending the Waif after her. Finally a real Arya vs. Waif fight?? We can only hope!
How. Many. TIMES?
While it was good to see other characters/things return, this was an obvious filler and builder episode. Even with that said, according to IMDB ratings it's one of the worst episodes of the entire show, despite being mostly on par with The Door - except that episode had the titular door.
