American Horror Story Coven: Why Lorrrrrrrrraine Can't WAIT for Wednesday! (Guest Post)

My winter warmer, aside from a harem of blonde Speedo models, is a cuppa and a good box-set marathon. American Horror Story is a Ryan Murphy anthology series, comprised of stand-alone seasons. The first two award-winning instalments are atop the list of my television favourites and I'm beyond excited for season three - Coven. Here are my three reasons that you should be too!

ONE

If we pretend that Emma Roberts doesn't exist, we're left with an absolutely flawless cast. Jessica Lange, who could convincingly act the part of a bowling ball without special effects or makeup, is joined by Kathy Bates in a role that Murphy promises is five times scarier than her psycho-killer character in Misery. I can only assume that means she'll actually crawl out of my television and smother me with her side-eyes alone.

Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Evan Peters (swoon), Denis O'Hare, Francis Conroy and Alexandra Breckenridge (swoon) are back again, but my true excitement comes from new additions, Gabourey Sidibe and Angela Basset. 

TWO

It's well researched and it shows. The extensive probing adds authenticity to costume and period-appropriate themes; the former is most evident in season one's Black Dahlia scenes, a collection of gorgeously styled shots.

Awareness of the region's history turned up heinous events, ripe for inspiration. Kathy Bates plays a modified-for-television version of Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite who murdered and tortured black slaves at her New Orleans mansion. All reports of her crimes are stomach-turning. It will be interesting to see how this adaptation plays out in a modern setting.

THREE

New Girl's cute-as-a-fluffy-button Jess Day, Girl's uber-prissy Shosh, Dexter's human-Barbie Hannah - I'm pretty bored of female characters who couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.  Thankfully, American Horror Story's women are BAMFS.

Across the first two miniseries, the main plot-points lay on female characters and it looks like Coven will be sticking with this set-up.  So refreshing to see.

American Horror Story Coven is set to premiere on October 9, 2013 and will reach a shady streaming site near you shortly after.
