Shocking Make Up Tutorials Aimed at Raising Awareness

How to Cover Up the Morning After
You may have seen this make up tutorial from Lauren Luke, raising awareness of domestic abuse that has gone viral over the past couple of days. It's hugely powerful and astutely taps into the current Youtube beauty tutorial craze to reach the girls and women that may be suffering in silence at the hands of a violent or abusive partner.

If you are living in an abusive relationship there is always confidential help and support at hand. Womensaid.ie are there to listen and aid you, there's a national Freephone Helpline 1800 341 900 that you can call in confidence. Not everyone that's living in an abusive relationship feels like a victim so do please remember, if it doesn't feel right, it's not alright

A Crash Course to Shine

A Crash Course to Shine comes from teenage Dutch make up Artist Nikkie from Nikkietutorials.com in association with Volkswagon. Some of you may know that I work as a Road Safety Officer 'in real life' so this one genuinely touches a nerve. Statistics show that in 2009 alone over half a million girls and women were involved in road accidents as a direct result of applying make up, while driving.

You may be thinking that people couldn't be that silly, that ignorant of the safety of not only themselves but of the other road users, of children walking to school and men and women commuting with their families. Surely they don't think their second coat of mascara, sweep of blush or slick of lipgloss is more important than taking responsibility for the vehicle they're driving? Unfortunately some people do. It only takes a second of lapsed concentration to irrevocably change your life and the lives of others while you're driving.

I'd love to know your thoughts on either of these videos, do you think they're effective? Are there any other areas that videos such as these could be used to raise awareness?

  1. I definitely think they're effective in raising awareness, I just hope to god they're effective enough to make people affected seek help or in the second case, be more careful. The end of the Lauren Luke one sends chills down my spine, it's just pure fear, and I really hope that anyone watching that who's in a similar position will realise what the videos are trying to do and seek help.

  2. I cried my eyes out watching Lauren's video. I'm glad to see new tactics in getting people not in that position to understand how difficult it must be to speak out and in turn inspire women who are to speak out.

Same goes for the driving. It terrifies me.

Well done to those spearheading these campaigns!

  3. I saw Lauren's video pop up in my sub-box and was really confused for the first few seconds, especially as she doesn't upload very regularly anymore, until I had the ah-ha moment! Great idea for both of them - hadn't spotted Nikkie's one strangely, even though I'm subbed to her too! But fair play to them using the platform they have to raise awareness about very important issues!

  4. I had seen Lauren's video already and it really does an great job at raising awareness. She genuinely looks fearful at the end of the video. I had not seen Nikkie's one though and jesus christ! My heart jumped when the crash came. Really violent but jesus it gets the point across. Fair play to both of them for raising awareness!
