(R)Ides of March (Silent R) - Review

Who's in it?

Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, George Clooney and Philip Seymour Hoffman

What's it about?

A fourth directorial outing for Clooney, The Ides of March is a clever and tightly wound political thriller with an outstanding cast. During the final push for a Presidential Primary in Ohio, Gosling as the rising star campaign secretary is faced with several decisions that will test his integrity, his morals and ultimately open his eyes to the world of politics at its dirtiest.

Any Good?

The entire film plays like hotly contested but very slick game of chess. The cast are equally superb and I genuinely can't pick one over another as a stand out. Although this is Clooney's baby he chooses a background but integral role, allowing the others to shine. The plot is straightforward and simple to follow but the calibre of acting and character development keep you guessing, right to the last.

There are moral dilemmas, betrayal and tragedy caught up in the tornado that is Senator Morris' (Clooney) campaign but it doesn't stop for a beat. True colours are shown and integrity tested to its limits.

I haven't been exactly quiet about my grĂ¡ for Gosling this summer but to see him play this part so subtly means he has taken yet another step up in the Hollywood big leagues.

There's already Oscar buzz aplenty surrounding The Ides of March and having sat, gripped, for it's entire 1hr 42 minutes I can see why. Politics doesn't have to be your 'Thang' to enjoy this, if you're looking for a thriller that will keep you thinking, get along to see it.
